Ah amazonite, this is one of my favourite gemstones. The blue and green colours are mesmerising once you've got a piece of this stone in your hand.... Enjoy!

The astrological gem for virgo is amazonite, and it's also the birthstone for December.

Amazonite gets its green color from small impurities of lead.

Mohs scale rating = 6 - 6.5

Has a triclinic crystal structure.

Although its' name is derived from the Amazon River, no deposits have ever been found there!

Amazonite is referred to as a gem, but it's actually a variety of green microcline feldspar. It's found in the United States, Australia, Brazil, and Zimbabwe, besides several other countries. The color of Amazonite ranges from a bright green to a bluish green and has an iridescent reflection in the mineral grains, also called a schiller. It is opaque to translucent, and most often is polished into a cabochon shape, unlike other gems which are faceted. On the Mohs scale, amazonite ranges from a 5 to a 6, making it a relatively soft stone.

Like most gems, amazonite has a colorful folklore. Said to have been worn or named after the Amazon women warriors during the Bronze Age, amazonite was also reported to have been used by the Egyptians. Although its' name is derived from the Amazon River, no deposits have ever been found there!

It's claimed that amazonite can calm ones' emotions, soothe nerves, enhance creativity and release fear and anxiety.

Amazonite is often called the "hope stone" and inspires confidence and hope. It is the stone for the astrological sign Virgo. Amazonite is claimed to enhance creativity, be a soothing stone, and improve ones feelings of self-worth. Amazonite balances feminine and masculine energy, and is the stone of choice for artists and men. Its "chakra" is the fifth chakra, or throat. For healing and health, amazonite is supposed to help with menstrual cramps, muscle cramps/spasms, and even is supposed to help during childbirth.

Another healing benefit of amazonite is that it gives emotional balance and physical endurance, and dissolves sadness and grief. One bit of folklore surrounding amazonite should make parents very happy--amazonite is supposed to motivate lazy teenagers!
